Rise of western christianity- most books written by monks, and churches commissions much of the art work, resulting in little to no sexual content. Johannes gutenberg develops printing press (1450)- ends church monopoly on written word; widespread availability of pornography. Invention of pornography (19th century)- leads us congress to pass. Hugh hefner publishes playboy (1953)- brings pornography into the mainstream. Home video/internet- explicit videos become readily available and private. Focus more on sex act than the plot. Males: tend to use visual sexual content for erotica/stress relief. Women: more likely to read explicit content for recreation, education, and support and support.
