Document Summary

You can see fungi structures in light microscopy. Sexual and asexual spores are produced in large amounts by almost all fungi. ~200,000 species of fungi have been studied. Asexual spores are arranged in large sacs. You might have thousands in one sac. Sexual spores are produced in sac called asci. Sexual spores are contained in clubs called basidia. Septate hyphae: cross-wall along hyphae in higher fungi. Coenocytic hyphae: multiple nuclei act together in one cell in lower fungi. A fungal spore is alive but dormant. When it grows, hyphae come out of it and form an entirely new colony. In sexual spores, a + spore and - spore combine at the tip and form hyphae. 5 miles of mycelia grow in a loaf of bread. In asexual reproduction, the nutrients come in through mycelia. Penicillium release spores from their finger-like projections. Aspergillus are spherical with projections all outside that release spores. Each fungus produces large numbers of spores.
