BIOS 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Microorganism, Salmonellosis, Zoonosis
Document Summary
Bios 111 disease of the day - salmonella lecture 28 (3/27/17) Komodo dragons inoculate their victims with salmonella and come back later to eat them. They aren"t susceptible to it because their blood is filled with antibacterial polypeptides. Most vitamins needed were discovered by people looking for causes of diseases. Rickets, typhoid fever, scurvy, beriberi, pellagra, and anemia are caused by vitamin deficiencies, not from bacteria/microorganisms. Vegetarians need to take vitamin b12 supplements because it comes from bacteria in animal guts. Bacteria use and make the same vitamins that we use. Typhus: caused by obligate intracellular bacteria spread by lice. Chlorination made it drop even more and now it"s leveled out. Remaining cases are caused by carriers that didn"t know they had it and were spreading it. Water from source (lake, river, etc. ) goes into a mixing tank with flocculant so bacteria settle to the bottom. Then take the rest of the water and filter to remove any particles.
