Document Summary

Bios 111 disease of the day - mycoplasmas lecture 25 (3/13/17) They kill normal bacteria, mycoplasma, chlamydia, and rickettsia. Therefore they are not inhibited by ampicillins or cephalosporins. Rickettsias, chlamydias, and mycoplasmas are smaller than free living bacteria so they lose some genes. Free living organisms have about 4,000 genes. Mycoplasmas have the smallest number of genes of any known microorganism. Theoretical minimum amount of genes for a replicating cell is somewhere around 300. Cause diseases of the lungs and sinus. Bacteria as a group don"t have sterols but they are present in the membranes of the mycoplasmas. They steal them from their host and use them to strengthen their membranes. Urinary tract infections can be caused by mycoplasmas. You can barely see them with the naked eye. Mycoplasmal pneumonia is the same as primary atypical pneumonia. Most important of other causes of pneumonia. 10-20% of all pneumonia cases are caused by mycoplasmas.
