Our response is based on meaning we attach to other person"s actions. Meanings of actions reflects norms and values of dominant culture and our own socialization experiences social structure. Way in which society is organized into predictable relationships. 5 elements of social structure statuses social roles. Any of full range of socially defined positions in a large group or society, from lowest to highest can hold many statuses at once. Ascribed status social position assigned to person by society w/o regard to person"s talents or characteristics. Achieved status social position that a person attains largely through his or her own efforts. Master statuses status that dominates others and determines person"s general position in society. Ex. president, race, gender, disability set of expectations for people who have given social position or status. When incompatible expectations rise from 2 or more social positions held by same person. Go to birthday party, visit mom in hospital, come in to cover shift role strain.
