BIOL 207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Metacarpal Bones, Sesame, Endosteum
Document Summary
Support provides support for rest of body, muscles are attached to bones and structures. Cranial, vertebrae, ribs, sternum, hip bones ( low abdominal organs) Mineral storage- calcium and phospate stored in bone after blood levels decrease. If calcium blood levels are high hormones remove calium from bones and deposit. Blood cell production- hematopoesis occurs in red bone marrow. Both have same physiologhy in terms of growth: long bone, longer than they are wide. Made up of shaft, bone ends, and mebranes. Fibulla, tibia, phalanges, metacarpals, femur, metatarsals: short bones roughly cube like. Two categories of bone in terms of design: compact bone (periosteum) - hard and tough, bones structures thightly compacted, outside layer of bone, spongy ( endosteium) bone looks like sponge, spaced out. Also know as cancelllus bone inside compact bone, honeycomb of small neddle- like flat pieces (trabeculae) Skeletal system designed to be strong but not heavy. Ex. located in wrist carpals, tarsals of ankles.
