Shaping classroom behaviors: facilitating learning through positive reinforcement. For example: participation points to emphasize important points and to reward learning, reducing disruptive behaviors through negative reinforcement. An example: pausing the lecture to show the talking during class is not ok, limitations of reinforcement theory. Sometimes people feed off of negative reinforcement: become more vocal, especially if it offends. Tends to ignore self-reinforcements: not all reinforcements come from the outside, when someone says good for you . Assumptions: a lot of behavior is internally driven by things inside one"s own head. How people feel about things is profoundly influenced by these cognitions. The feeling states in depression (demoralization, hopelessness, lowered self-worth) are reinforced by negative thinking: coping with depression by combatting negative thinking, theories of counseling and psychotherapy based on the idea that thinking controls feelings.
