The gene model at right shows part of the promoter region (this includes both enhancers and the core promoter) for the gr in rats. Regions in part b correlate with the numbers in part a. lg/abn is licking behavior/arched back nursing. What is happening in the well-licked rats: the promoters are less methylated. Stress hormones are lower in rats that are groomed by their mothers for their first few days as pups. Part of the negative feedback response for this comes from glucocorticoid receptors. Should there be more or less gr in well-licked rats: more. It turns out that in humans abused children tend to have more methylation on this promoter as well. In the data shown they looked at abused children who ultimately committed suicide. They had a dramatically higher methylated promoter region over controls.
