PSYCH 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Frontal Lobe, Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Neuropsychology
Document Summary
Important for explicit memory, but memory is not permanently stored. Combined with other structures for initial encoding-binds together activity in different parts of the cortex. Normal working memory, can carry on a conversation. Cortex-for long term memory as it gets consolidated by the hippocampus. Can form musical preferences without recognizing the melodies. Memory if influenced by interim misinformation, how you were questioned later on. False memory can be planted( generally through repetition of false impressions) Neuro transmitters are chemicals that allow neurons to communicate. Action potential-it is the electric impulse fired in the neuron, goes only one way. Neurons don"t physically touch, there is a gap called the synaptic gap. Limbic system-regulation thalamus-sensory relay station hypothalamus- regulates glands. Clinical case studies;accidents( strokes, head trauma, infections, epilepsy, brain tumor) Brain damage provides clue on which part performs what functions. Left hemisphere good with language, reasoning, scientific skills, number skills.
