BIOLOGY 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Ground Tissue, Parenchyma, Tracheid
Document Summary
Throughout the plant: cortex of roots, ground tissue in stems, mesophyll of leaves, fruits pulp, seeds endosperm. The collenchyma has thickened walls that provide exible support to the plant. It serves most to the growing parts of the plants: shoots and leaves. It provides support by lling in vacant spaces used for later growth. Found under the epidermis in young stems and leaf veins found in the outer layer: sclerenchyma. They are found in bers in wood, bark, leaves, and stems. The sclerieds support and protect along with the bers. Fibers are long and narrow while sclereids are short and can vary in shape. Fibers are in various parts of the plant are classi ed by their location and strength. Sclerieds occur throughout the plant and are responsible for the hard coats on seeds, and gritty texture of fruits. Tracheids are responsible for water and mineral transport. They are long thin cells with tapering ends.
