BIOS 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Sylhet District, Sylhet Mag Osmani Medical College, Altered Level Of Consciousness
Document Summary
1st outbreak: nov 8 preliminary findings from a cluster of unusual deaths in. Gowainghat sub-district, sylhet district, located within 5 km of the northeastern border with india. Given the rapid onset and progression of illness and absence of fever as a prominent feature of illness onset, this seemed to be related to a toxic exposure. 2nd outbreak: sylhet medical college hospital from the iedrc team put them on high alert for identifying clusters nov 8 they reported a cluster of 8 patients from. Companyganj sub-district currently hospitalized with what they described as meningo-encephalitis syndrome. Patients were distinct from gowainghat and reported fever followed by altered mental status. It became clear that the clusters from gowainghat and companyganj were the same outbreak. Teams consisted of icddr, b and iedcr staff, including physicians, medical epidemiologists, and anthropologist (their expertise in gaining trust of communities and in-depth interview techniques had proven invaluable in previous outbreaks).
