Document Summary

Chromosomes are the location of mendel"s heritable factors. Nobel prize for discoveries elucidating the rule that the chromosome plays in heredity. Flies (drosophila melanogaster) have only four pairs of chromosomes (but really only three, the fourth is very small), so the genetics is simple. Sex linkage led to the discovery of sex chromosomes. Ex. only males could have white eyes. In another experiment, male flies with red eyes were crossed with female flies with white eyes. All f1 females had red eyes and all males had white eyes. F2 showed 50% of each sex with red and 50% white. F1 males like they had only one copy of the gene, females acted like they had two copies of the gene. F2 explained by a new chromosome, sex chromosomes. Sex linkage means that the phenotypic ratios are different in males and females. Sex linked inheritance lead to the discovery of sex chromosomes.
