Chapter 14: mendel and the idea of the gene. Blending hypothesis- genetic material contributed by the two parents mixes. Particulate hypothesis- the gene idea, parents pass discrete heritable units (genes) that retain their separate identities in the offspring. Character- heritable feature (term used by breeders) We now say a gene controls a heritable character. Trait- particular variant of a character (variations of a size) Now we say that alleles are the different versions of a gene. Distinct heritable features (characters): flower color, seed color. Distinct character variants (traits): purple or white flowers. Studied 7 characters, each existing in one of two contrasting form (traits) In pea plants, a single flower produces male and female gametes. Each flower has sperm-producing organs and an egg producing organ. Fertilization is easy (cross fertilization or self fertilization) In a typical experiment mendel mates two contrasting, true breeding varieties, a process called hybridization pure bred . The true breeding parents are the p generation.
