Document Summary

The living cell is a miniature chemical factory where thousands of reactions occur. Metabolism is the totally of an organism"s chemical reactions. Catabolism: breaking down molecules to get energy. Anabolism: building up molecules to make new cell structures. Catabolic pathways release energy by breaking down molecules into simpler compounds. Ex. cellular respiration- the breakdown of glucose in the presence of o2. Anabolic pathways consume energy to build complex molecules from simpler ones. Ex. synthesis of protein from amino acids. Chemical energy-stored in chemical bond and is released when the bond is broken. Thermodynamics can tell us when a chemical reaction will occur spontaneously or will not occur spontaneously. Called exergonic reaction because there"s a release of energy. A non- spontaneous reaction called endergonic reaction because there needs to be an input of energy before the reaction can happen. Si unit: free energy (g) tell if it"s spontaneous or not.
