VPAT 3100H Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Tendon Sheath, Respiratory Tract, Tenosynovitis
Document Summary
Muscle system consists of: muscles, tendons, ligaments: purpose of muscles- contractions, purpose of tendons- connects muscles to bones, purpose of ligament connects bones to bones or cartilage to cartilage. Insertion- muscle where it attaches and that bone moves; usually more distal because we are talking about limbs or heads. Tendon sheath: bone underneath fuses with tendon sheath, synovial- type of joint that is surrounded by a thick flexible membrane forming a sac into which is secreted a viscous fluid that lubricates the joint. In ankles & wrists: species that can do this- raccoon, cats, ferrets, supination- rotating dorsal. Important muscles to know: masseter muscle- aka cheek muscle; main muscle for chewing- brings mandible up, respiratory muscles, external intercostal muscles- Internal intercostal muscles- help contract entire rib cage down: diaphragm, birds & lizards lack, forelimb muscles, major extensor of the forelimb triceps brachii muscle, tri- meaning 3, major flexor biceps brachii muscle, abdominal muscles, external oblique.
