Document Summary

Diseases more common in older adults: osteoporosis, osteoarthritis. Outer layer of the bone is compact bone resilient, durable and resists. 3 major regions shaft in the middle and the 2 knobs in the end epipheses compression. Inner layer is spongy and provides for lightness of the skeleton. In the center of the long bone there is marrow cavity. Healthy bone has an outer connective tissue, compact bone outside of spongy bone and at the epipheses, it is covered in cartilage. Exercise is essential to stimulate bone deposition. As muscles contract they exert stress or tension on bone and the deposition of new bone occurs. By the time you are 40, you will have achieved your full bone mass if you don"t. If you don"t have stress on a bone, it will lose its strength/the bone exercise, you will lose your bone mass by 1-3 per year.
