-The reason that they are in this position is, for historical reasons, they are in this
position but that is something that happened in history and because of that it can: the
relationship between men and women can change and the domination of men is not
something sanctified by natural law or divine law.
-Remember for Hegel, there is nothing such as the absolute truth; instead it is something
that is the result of a historical struggle and because of that it can change
-And what will change it? What will it take for slaves to change their position and not be
slaves anymore?
-Hegel says slaves know the world better because they work with material things. So the
slaves does manual labor has a better relationship with the world than the master does
not have.
-Hegel’s final point is that what makes the master a master is not that there is something
like an absolute truth out there.
-Divine or Natural or anything like that
-The divine always changes. The divine is where the spirit is. So there is none of that.
-What makes the master a master is the recognition of the slaves.
-The only thing that lets the master dominate the slaves is the fact that the slaves accept
the domination of the master. It is only because the women accept the position is that
they accept it.
-But in order to stop it, the first thing they need to do is withdraw their recognition from
their masters and the only way they can do that is when they understand that this is not
natural or divine. This is historical. So if they want to escape that, they can. And for
Hegel, it is really important that the way these struggles and resolved
-Geist is always going in the right direction in the direction of greatest freedom. So
women will be free once they are done with the struggle.
-When the spirit becomes absolute, Hegels idea is that all this is resolved. Everyone is
free as free as they can be.
-Mill
-Utilitarianism is the version/concept within consequentialism
-”To determine whether something is right or wrong, you cannot do it a priori”
-Where does ethical knowledge come from?
-Look at experience to tell if its right or wrong
-What is the goal?
-Happiness
-The right action is what produces the greatest amount of happiness for the most people.
-Utilitarianism assumes people can work out what makes other people happy
-Intelligence is also required to act morally. Even if you have the right intention, if the
outcome does not make people happy, it is not moral
-Mill makes the claim that if X is the only thing desired
-If i desire something, it ought to be denied
-Assumes you can’t possibly desire things bad for you
-Or whatever you desire is the right thing
-Mill speaks of virtue and defines happiness as a psychological phenomenon. Victorian
virtue was love of money, power, and fame.
-Happiness in terms of ruling class
-Utilitariansism produces common sense results
