KINS 4520 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Agnosticism, Signing Bonus
Document Summary
If we pay our student athletes in revenue sports, we would probably eliminate 22 of the other sports that we have at minnesota because only three of them generate enough money to pay for themselves. I am pretty agnostic on this issue. Also, not going to get into what model might work as it is putting the cart before the horse. This powerpoint will just look at the finance behind it. Comes from the same misunderstanding about the relationship between university administrators and athletic departments. Power of the myth that it will bankrupt them is also reinforced by general feelings of special treatment for athletes - for instance that different athletes will be paid different amounts, especially women. Conference presidents and athletic directors are already maximizing revenues, then athletes are already generating the money that is the source of their current grant-in-aid payment and would be the source of any increased payment.
