Society and culture of new england: background. 1516- there was no protestantism, but usually 3 groups: catholicism, orthodox and anglican. Martin luther was one of many critics of the catholic church in the 95 theses. Believes christians were saved by faith alone. Didn"t believe in paying your sins away". Didn"t like the power in the church (catholic) Believes you only need faith, the bible and guidance of a local pastor at a local congregation (lutheranism) Had priests, ceremony, churches that used to be catholic churches. Want to break away from anglican church because of the catholic influence: religious beliefs. Puritans remain in the anglican church but want to get rid of catholic influence. Church is dull (white, no images, no paint: saw stuff like that as "catholic stuff" Can get in trouble for not having sex. Drank beer rather than water (safer because water can be unhealthy) War between them and monarch (catholics) led by charles i in england.
