Document Summary

Columbus sets up continual contact between the americas and europe (old world) Protestant reformation: 1520; main player was martin luther. Big problem the protestant reformation tackled was the treasury of merit. The treasury of merit was basically a giant bank account of excess goodness/ merit from saints and jesus that can get you into heaven. Protestantism believes everything christians believe must come from the bible. Because of these 2 beliefs, reading becomes an important part of the protestant. Reformation (p. r. ) because you have to understand why you believe in god. The p. r. changes the role of priests. Priests used to forgive sins in the catholic church, but protestant ministers only stimulate a belief that you must complete on your own (through believing jesus as your savior) John calvin had a direct impact on the u. s. Calvin was a french protestant and then went to switzerland. He believed that the bible has a speci c government churches should have.
