Not a direct child of a god; but a descendant - related by blood to many gods and the founder of thebes (great great great grandfather) Appeared in the odyssey in the underworld; Tell us that oedipus"s mother married her own son, who killed his father and ruled thebes; mother committed suicide. Oedipus"s parents exposed" their child (give up) to die of natural causes. They pierced his foot and stuck a rod through it so its spirit won"t come after the parents. The slave that was supposed to give up the child instead gave it to a shepherd and raises him as his own. King calls him oedipus because it means swollen foot".
