Norms- social rules that say how people should behave. Sometimes formalized into laws (written down, backed by authority) Sanctions- reactions from others when you follow/ break the norms. Folkways- informal norms, no big deal if you break them. Mores- strong norms, serious consequences if you break them: values- socially shared ideas about what is good, valuable, or important. Subcultures- groups of people who share values, norms,or rituals that set them apart from the dominant culture (smaller group within a society that is somehow unique) Can be member in more than one at same time. Group of people who reject values and norms of dominant culture and seek alternate lifestyles.
