Culture is what allows us to do things together. Material culture: all physical objects that a society produces and gives meaning to. Non-material culture: abstract human creations that have meaning. Components of culture: norms: shared rules or expectations by which society guides behavior of its members. Folkways: ordinary conventions of everyday life; conformity is expected but not required. Mores: strong norms that have a moral significance; violations of mores are considered serious. Taboo: powerful social belief against a specific act that is considered loathsome. Law: a rules of society that had been formally enacted by a political authority and is backed by the power of the state. All norms are supported by a system of social control.
