ESC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Geosphere, Ocean Current, Hydrosphere
Document Summary
Atmosphere -> climatology, meteorology hydrosphere -> oceanography, geology biosphere -> geology. All spheres interact with each other and affect each other. Ocean circulation patterns are shifting around -> continents are shifting around. Super continent broke up bit by bit (not all at the same time) Last part to break up was south america and antarctica changed circulation pattern. Antarctica used to be warm but ocean current changed and equatorial waters changed so its cold now. Energy the ability to do work (move something, heat something up, etc. ) Internal sources: mass of earth -> gravity, creates canyons, mudslides, rock falls. Heat from radioactive decay, heat from formation of earth. External sources: gravity (sun and moon) interactions between the moon and the earth. Formulate scientific hypothesis to explain observations, should be predictive and testable. Create a test of hypothesis, new set of observations or experiments. After test results discard, alter, or retain more tests.
