Earth science the study of the solid earth, oceans, atmosphere, life, and our seing in space. Earth science especially deals with the interacions of various components, focusing on the earth as a series of systems, an approach called earth-system science. Geology the study of the earth; the shape and character of the land we live on. Geologic factors also control the distribuion of energy, mineral resources, and cropland. Includes life and all the places it exists. Overlaps the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere, extending from more than 10 km above the surface to more than 10 km beneath sea level, both on the sealoor and within the earth"s subsurface. Open system allows mater and energy to move in and out of the system. Closed system does not exchange mater, or perhaps even energy, with its surroundings. The earth as a whole is a fundamentally closed system.
