Ozzie and harry- typical american ideal of a family. Harry is white, jewish, ivy league educated, ozzie is afro-brazilian, catholic, less formally schooled. They are both male- their story illustrates just how strong our notion of the traditional family is. The nelsons- 1950s family, perfect and domestic. Traditional family- idealized model of male breadwinner, female homemaker, and their dependent children. Sociological imagination- the traditional family looks less like a universal norm and more like an ideological construct. Loving v. virginia- us supreme court unanimously struck down america"s anti miscegenation laws. Exogamy- marriage to someone outside one"s social group. Monogamy- a person can only partner with one other person. Polygamy- people have more than one sexual partner or spouse at a time. Normative traditional family- one in which a hetereosexual couple lives with their dependent children in a self-contained, economically independent household.
