Document Summary

Lesion- change in a body organ or tissue from disease or injury. Can be slowly infected with the disease but not show strong outward signs of disease. Ex west nile - vector is mosquito, reservoir is birds. Zoonosis- disease can be passed between humans and animals. Stress in animals; group size (too big or too small), sudden weather changes, other diseases, poor nutrition, etc. Stress makes an animal more susceptible to disease. Caused by living agents: bacteria, parasite, virus, etc. Pathogenicity- describes a pathogens ability to cause disease. Ex strains of e. coli are pathogenic, but there is non-pathogenic e. coli in our guts. Ex pathogenic strain of e. coli but its only mildly pathogenic and only causes a little diarrhea. Most infectious diseases are contagious but not all of them are. When we think about herds of animals, think about how diseases are introduced into a population of animals and how they are spread.
