PSYC 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Lateral Hypothalamus, Voltammetry, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Document Summary
Integrative nature of probing the brain during behavior: anatomy, genetic, function, neural activity control of brain, and neurochemical: use multiple tools to figure out what is happening in brain during behavior. Stereotaxic surgery- surgical apparatus that aligns brain across 3 dimensions: allows us to target a very specific location in the brain using 3d coordinates. Starting/reference points located on skull- bregma and lambda: stereotaxic atlas- use to know where you want to go, surgical process. Histology- look at brain and put markers on certain proteins: can put marker on multiple rna molecules simultaneously to find out if: Magnetic resonance imaging (mri)- uses interaction between radio waves and magnetic field to image the interior of body. Diffusion tensor imaging (dti)- emit pulse which changes direction of water molecule rotation to image fiber tracts: allows us to see white matter tracks. Inbreeding- inbred lines produce animals that are nearly genetically identical to each other.
