Document Summary
Psyc1100 lecture 13 learning ii (operant conditioning + observational learning) Learning an association between a behavior and its consequence. Edward thorndike"s law of effect : behaviors followed by pleasant consequences are more likely to be repeated, and behaviors followed by unpleasant consequences are less likely to be repeated. B. f. skinner: worked with only observable behavior. Operant conditioning chamber ( skinner box ): contains a lever (for rats) or a discs (for pigeons) to hit or peck, after which food is provided as a reward (animal associates behavior with the consequence) Skinner stated give me a child and i"ll shape him into anything . Positive reinforcement: adding a stimulus to increase desirable behavior. Negative reinforcement: remove a stimulus to increase behavior. Ex: scolding (stopped when a child behaves) Secondary reinforcer: the object itself is not essential for survival. Positive punishment: adding a stimulus to reduce undesired behavior. Negative punishment: removing a stimulus to decrease behavior.
