Divided into two stages because people are living so much longer. Later adulthood is 65-75/80 years old and very. Age is a poor guide for understanding the unique developmental issues of people as they get older. Chronological age is less of a determinant of what stage you are in than psychological state. Ageism in america: stereotypical and prejudicial outlook of elderly; don"t see them as wise and as a source of support. People think of them as old and needing to be warehoused away from mainstream society. We encourage them to retire, move away from the community and family to some community full of more old people. It benefits the rest of society because we don"t have to pay attention to their needs if we put them off in their own community somewhere. Discriminate, group profiling; why the elderly age segregate themselves; both the aging and younger people lose out from the loss of contacts.
