Communication that occurs between 2+ interdependent parties. Our relationships are guided by patterns and routines. They become more specified with longer relationships. When norms are violated, can lead to tensions. They have sets of expectations associated with them. Example: our president tweeting inappriately is the enacted role not fitting into expected role of presidency. Have to fill more than 1 role at once. You have to act as teacher and friend. We have different expectations of what a role should be. Example: romantic partner : we"re talking vs we"re in love. Reasons why we disclose: for clarity, to express emotions, for impressions. Afraid of risks, to be appropriate (no oversharing), How deep a conversation is based on relationship. We increase self disclosure as relationships get deeper. Uncertainty makes us curious, reduces intimacy, and is reduced by similarity. Uncertainty reduction: lowers jealousy and improves relational maintenance. 3 types of attachment that children have to parents.
