Emotional communication- the minute signals of affect, attention, approach/avoidance, dominance/submission. Must be studied by studying the individual within the social system. Sign- nonverbal indication of what is about to happen or what message is being conveyed. Ex. clouds are a sign of rain. Nonvoluntary- can"t hide it in the moment. Useful for self-regulation, reflection, learning- monitoring system for humans. 6 primary affects- happy, sad, fear, anger, surprise, disgust. Nonverbal sending accuracy- how good were people sending out messages. Nonverbal receiving ability- how good were the people guessing the emotions guessing. Pesudospontaneous communication- totally at ease vs. faking it. Self-deception- repression- can help numb a pain. Coping- label how we feel, say you"re tired, but you"re actually sad.
