Lecture 7: the communication of emotion: february 18, 2019. Nonverbal: verbal, anything that uses words, nonverbal, substitutes to words, or adds on to communication. Emotion: biological level, avoided in early communications studies, how we use them to communicate, can keep you alive. Emotional communication: the minute signals of affect, attention, approach/avoidance, dominance/submission, these signals help to shape social order, must be studied by studying the individual within the social system, needs context. Spontaneous communication: based upon a biologically-shared signal system, don"t need to study communication to know about, nonvoluntary, happens naturally, do not decide to look scared, look happy. Involves signs, not symbols: ex: mouth open, eyes wide, behaviors are directly connected to the referent, nonpropositional (never false, when it happens, it is true, mainly right-brained, right-brained is tied to emotion. Symbolic communication: a socially-shared system, voluntary, we can participate or not. Involves symbols (arbitrary: propositional (can be false, mainly left-brained. Symbolic: better approach to emotion than verbal vs nonverbal.
