Chem 1127q - lecture 11 - redox reactions. Oil rig = oxidation is losing, reduction is gaining (electrons) Leo the lion says ger = losing e- is oxidation, gaining e- is reduction. Oxidation and reduction always happen together, not in isolation, because in order for something to be oxidized, something else must be reduced, and vice versa. This is why we always call reactions in which this happens redox reactions . That is because towel is drying something else, but it"s getting wet as it"s doing so. Thus, we would call the towel the drying agent because it is drying the surface, but it is gaining water, or becoming less dry. Conversely, the surface becomes less wet (drier) the more water is taken away by the towel. This equates to how something that is a reducing agent is being oxidized and how something that is an oxidizing agent is being reduced.
