BIOL 1108 Lecture 19: Chapter 44 Animal Evolution (Animal Diversity) Part 1
Document Summary
There are an estimated 5-30 million animal species: 1. 5 million species have been described, which means they have gone through the long process of giving a species a name. You need a lot of evidence, dna, descriptions of everything, type specimen (examples of that organism) to send around and keep as documentation, zoological records, and then get it published. Metazoa phylogeny is partly based on body plan, patterns of early development, whether or not there is a gut, and the differences in animals in grades of complexity. In sponges, each cell retains a full range of function. If they are chopped up, but cells are still together, hey can reassemble into functional sponge bodies (over and over again): chemically exotic. Larvae are blastulae that drift away to settle somewhere nearby or are retained by the parent: come in a wide variety of body forms (vase shaped w hollow center, chambers and passages, fans, globes)
