One of the most significant parts of history is the emergence of the state society. The state is characterized by the first cities. When anthropologists find a densely populated area, they wonder whether it is a city or not, and therefore whether it is a state or not. Elite control- people who are politically in charge. In-kind exchange gets replaced by buying and selling in the market. Is a mode of exchange usually through gifts economy. Buying and selling happen in a market. Dense concentrations of people living close to each other in fairly small dwelling units. Specialized occupations sometimes split up by different neighborhoods. The united states is not an agrarian state. We are not characterized as an industrial state. Has some sort of connection to the divine or supernatural.
