A redistributive event of the pacific northwest peoples (public giveaway) Chiefs (male and female) held/hold potlatches to mark a new status, usually marked by them taking on a new chiefly name". Even though one might be born into high rank, a chiefly person had to give a potlatch to proclaim and validate the new chiefly status. The purpose of the potlatch was to validate the new rank publicly.
