○ Course Reader: “Stats 10 Lab Manual” ($6)
○ iClicker
○ non-graphing calculator
● Grading: → write (1) name, (2) section, and (3) student ID # on every assignment
○Midterm 1 (25%) - May 2 in class
○Midterm 2 (25%) - June 6 in class
○Homework (18%) - 7 total (lowest score will be dropped)
○Online Quizzes (15%) - 5-6 total (lowest score will be dropped)
○Labs (15%) - 5 total
○iClicker Participation (2%) - (lowest 3 scores will be dropped)
WHAT IS STATISTICS & DATA?
● statistics
: the science of data & variability
○ the methodology of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data
○ making effective use of the data around us to make decisions about ourselves
and our surroundings
● data
: produced by people, machines, sensors, computers, phones (can be very large,
data are everywhere!)
○ data flows into server rooms from which summaries can be made
○ Ex
. Google Maps, GPS directions, charts, graphs, figures
● What are data? (“the building blocks of statistics”)
○ more than just numbers → collections of numbers, measurements or any type of
observation that someone records
○ can be quantitative (numerical
