Document Summary
Carbohydrates are important because we get energy from them (1 g=4 calories) Some come from animals (in the form of dairy products) Many sugars are processed - it is no longer in its natural state. Monosaccharides (1 sugar molecule) - 3 types. Is included because it makes foods sweet with not much of it - so food companies use it to increase profit. Disaccharides (2 sugar molecules) - 2 monosaccharides together - 3 types. Polysaccharides (more than 2 sugar molecules) - many glucose molecules. Fiber is unique, as it does not have 4 cal/gram. Sugar is digested very quickly in the body, and complex carbohydrates are digested slower. The faster things are digested, the sooner you will get hungry again. Due to sugar digesting quickly and releasing a lot of insulin, it promotes weight gain [ Added sugar has a lot of negative effects on the body - it is almost analogous to poison.
