Document Summary

Lecture 20 notes (week 7 #2 / wednesday) Is more prone to damage in the blood vessels. As they breakdown, they build up on the sides of the blood vessels, causing fat deposits and slowdown of the blood flow (diameter shrinks) Called atherosclerosis - it happens slowly over many years. Atherosclerosis: initiation (ldl oxidation): ldl vesicles are being exposed to an abnormal amount of oxygen. Happens due to reactive oxygen species (ros) As a result, the ldl starts to breakdown and become attached to the side of the blood vessel. No flow impedance: inflammation (immune activity): the immune system detects something out of the ordinary and becomes more active. Immune system tries to get rid of the ldl stuck on the blood vessels. The immune cells are called macrophages (bigger than the ldl) Hdl also comes to clear the mess.
