It means that variations in the environment have a major influence in determining what song the bird sings. Differences in genotype across dialect regions do not appear to account for the differences in behavior, but differences in environment do account for behavioral differences. Back to evan and danielle analogy- in biology, you can do an experiment to vary one factor to observe its casual effect. The magnitude of changes caused by environment or genes can give an impression of which has a greater effect. Focus on explaining differences in traits, and different effects of various environments or genes (manipulate one, measure the other) By manipulating environment, one can determine if differences in environment affect the trait and how much but the effect of environment may depend of which genes was held constant. Effects of environment and genetics are interdependent, or interact.
