Document Summary

Elementary quantitative data analysis: most basic use of social statistics, using numbers to discover and describe patterns in your data o. Statistical techniques used to describe and analyze variation in quantitative data: why do it. Statistic- describes some aspect of variables in a sample of a larger population. Parameter- describes some aspect of variables in population: descriptive statistics: describe the distribution and relationship among variables o. Inferential statistics- describe how likely it is that a statistic based on random sample is drawn. The variation of values in each variable of interest: graphs and frequency distributions are the two most popular ways to display distributions of a variable. Frequency distributions: numerical display showing the number of cases and the percentage of cases for each of the variables values, will include base number. Used less than other two measures of central tendency. Used for nominal level variables: median. The value located at the 50th percentile in the distribution.
