Sensorimotor: infant learns about environment through senses & motor activities. Preoperational: child can form mental representations but tend to focus on one attention- grabbing feature at a time; egocentric (during social interactions) Concrete operations: child can manipulate mental states, transform them, reverse them. Formal operations: adolescent can think systematically about abstract, hypothetical possibilities. Most of piaget"s findings have held up: if you repeat his experiments, same results. Some of his explanations for his findings were wrong. He underestimated the importance of executive control . Have learned about ventromedial prefrontal cortex -> important for incorporating past & emotions into decision making. One of last areas of brain to develop fully. Inhibiting irrelevant or inappropriate behavior, thoughts, or emotional impulses. *takes longest to develop since last place where myelination occurs in development. As the brain develops, axons of neurons become coated with myelin. An electrical charge (action potential) travels faster on myelinated neuron that on a non- myelinated neuron.
