Who is piaget: swiss biologist, developmental theorist, cared about basic philosophical questions; epistemology, how we come to know things. Piaget"s method: studied infants and small children ; gave them difficult problems to solve, looked at the patterns of mistakes the children made when trying to reason, tried to figure out how kids make sense of the world. Learning is an active process: infant is constantly testing hypothesis about the physical and social worlds. Cognitive development occurs in stages: there are four developmental stages when growing up, each stage involves a different way to reason, stages are as followed, sensorimotor stage (0-2) Object permanence: knowing objects continue to exist even when you aren"t paying that much attention to it. Systematically thinks through all the possibilities given; looks at one factor at a time, then combines all together; is able to keep track of all the results. Executive control: sustaining and directing attention, maintaining information in working memory.
