PSY BEH 11A Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Virtual Reality, Spacetime, Bitters
Document Summary
Only theories -> are not sure of what is going on. Have talked about the problem of consciousness & how related to brain activity. Hoffman will argue this is wrong based on evolutionary psychology. Hoffman is going to argue that this assumption is false & that is where we are going wrong when trying to figure out consciousness. *assumption: space, time, & objects exist even when unperceived. **space, time, & matter are the right concepts to describe objective reality. We assume in most models that neurons cause conscious experiences & they exist even when not perceived -> if false then neurons do not exist when not perceived. We assume that our senses give us the truth of the world. Already some hints that might not be right -> 1/3 of cortex is engaged in vision. Most cognitive neuroscientists: we construct what we see. If vision was like camera then would not need all of that neural activity.
