They have a bunch of mini brains that are each devoted to certain tasks. Vertebrates-have a centralized brain because of the spinal cord. Able to function more ef ciently because of the centralized brain and all parts are able to talk to each other. Complexity of an animals intelligence depends not on the size of its cortex but possible the ratio of brain weight to body weight. The folding of the cerebral cortex in the form of ridges and grooves increases the surface area of the cortex and increases the amount of grey matter in the brain. Neuroscience: multidisciplinary investigation of the nature, function, and origins of the nervous system. Primary goal of neuroscience is to discover neurocorrelates to behavior. Speci c areas of brain damage are associated with speci c language defects. Lesion studies-brian tissue is destroyed or removed and the effects on behavior are observed. Small local lesions can disrupt connecting pathways between two unaffected areas.
