Students who learn about brain plasticity and social issues had 0% increase in depressive symptoms. Genetic component: women have higher likelihood for depression. Attention impaired, can"t focus, inability to experience pleasure(anhedonia), Depressed individuals thought to have low levels of these monoamines. Maoi inhibits this process ---> cause for higher levels of these monoamines. Next gen: tricyclic antidepressants blocks reuptake of serotonin and ne allowing them to accumulate. Using drugs that deplete serotonin don"t produced depression. Increasing serotonin through other means still don"t help depressed individuals recover. Active placebos don"t have anything to do with serotonin- fools patients into thinking they are taking antidepressant. These active placebos work as well as ssris. Increases suicide risk of suicide risk in teens. Early childhood trauma --> high levels of cortisol --> more prone to depression. Crf secreted by brain in new situations --> into dopamine neurons in nucleus accumbens allowing pleasurable feelings.
