Both hypertonic and isotonic solutions have water that ows out of the cell. Tonicity: the ability of a solution to cause a cell to lose or gain water, it depends on the concentration of solutes that cannot cross the membrane. Water ows across the membrane of an animal cell through aquaporins, osmosis or facilitated di usion. The di usion of water across a permeable membrane is called osmosis. Electrogenic pump (the main one in plants, bacteria and fungi) All transport proteins involved in active transport are carrier proteins, not channel proteins. Electrogenic pump (the main one in animal cells) Inside of the cell is more negative than outside. Co-transporter: gradient generated by one molecule drives active transport of another.
