BIO SCI 75 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Vas Deferens, Spermatic Cord, Seminal Vesicle
Document Summary
Overview of functional components: site of formation of sperm = testes, transport and storage of sperm is the epididymis, vas deferens, urethra, secretion support fluids (90% of semen) comes from accessory glands (seminal vesicle, prostate, and cowper"s gland) Introduction of sperm to vagina and penis: sperm cells and differentiation. Nurse cells (sertoli cells) inside the seminiferous tubule. Germ cells (including stem cells, sperm producing cells and mature sperm cells) Inguinal canal is a passage between the abdominal cavity and the scrotum. Testes form in the abdomen and at 7 months fetal life move through inguinal canal to scrotum. Spermatic cord is formed by migration of testes which drags along everything attached to it: vas deferens, blood vessels, nerves. Muscles of spermatic cord can retract testis for temperature regulation, 95 degrees f necessary for sperm formation. If testes don"t descend, no sperm but normal secondary sex characteristics. Tubules for storage and transport sperm: epididymis.
