Spread of the african honeybee: a bee that was brought into south america to increase the productivity of honey. They were brought into brazil in 1956. Iso lines indicate how rapidly the bees have spread (find a graph for this later). The italian bee is a much tamer species that was in the tropics at the time. The african honeybee escaped in 1957 and drove out the italian honeybee. Usually hybrids" ability to reproduce is not good. Moves at a rate of 60-70 miles a year. Crosses the panama canal in 1982, reaches mexico in 1985, and reaches california in: they are presently in texas, arizona, and southern nevada. The cold of the north stopped them. They are aggressive towards humans and domestic animals. They may replace established honeybees in the u. s. Spread of the zebra mussel: fingernail size mollusk native to the caspian sea. Discovered in lake st. claire (near detroit) in 1988.
